Who we are
I started Onaji Kama to share my love of Japanese food with Austin, TX. While Austin is already home to many great omakase and sushi restaurants, I never found the kaisendon that I fell in love with while traveling in Japan.
I started making kaisendon and chirashi for my own family when grocery stores began carrying saku blocks of fresh and frozen sushi grade fish. This inspired me to start combining flavors and making the dish my own.
I continued to educate myself on traditional and nontraditional donburi while dining abroad. I visited Japan and was fascinated with the offerings in the Tsukiji fish market.
Soon kaisendon were a weekly rotation in my families dinner menu. Onaji Kama was born from a desire to share my love of chirashi with friends and family, and I hope you find something you love too.
The name, Onaji Kama, comes from a phrase in Japanese about spending time together, literally, sharing rice from the same pot. Like strangers breaking bread, I look forward to sharing my rice with you.
